Most locums accept 4-6 shifts per week.
Based in ED, their shifts are:
ED1: 0700-1700 – takes handover from night doctor
EDSSU: (short stay unit) 0700 - 1700
ED2: 0800-1800
ED3: 12:30-22:30
NIGHT: 21:30-07:30
When able to staff, we have an ED Extra 1000-2000, helping to cover the busier periods of late morning and the evening.
There is always a GP Anaesthetist elsewhere in the hospital (or on-call after hours) who can assist as required.
Full time is 4 x 10 hour shifts per week, though many locums elect to work more than this for short stints.
New locums would always start with a day shift that includes orientation and some time in ED.
They try to share the on-call responsibilities between staff, often once or twice a week. There is over-night on call allocated to the ED3 staff member and this is 2230 – 0730. If they have NNR credentialing, this may also be an on-call responsibility.
