The Position
Skilled Medical are seeking applications for the position of Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery in a metropolitan hospital in New Zealand's North Island commencing December 2021.
Doctors who have completed their cardiothoracic training and acquired specialty fellowship (or its equivalent) and who are able to complete routine cardiac procedures independently are encouraged to apply.
Obligations include managing inpatients and outpatients department under the supervision of the Cardiothoracic Surgeon, undertake clinical duties as directed by the Head of Department, cardiothoracic Surgery, participate in the on-call SMO roster, participate in departmental meetings and be involved in teaching and service development, conduct research and quality improvement projects.
The fellowship provides experience in various aspects of adult cardiac surgery, and includes total arterial revascularisation, multiple valve replacement and repair, rheumatic heart disease, thoracic aortic surgery including stenting and hybrid aortic procedures. The fellow oversees and guides registrars in the day to day postoperative care of patients.
Fellows in this program are expected to involve themselves in divisional research activities, and prepare presentations for research events.
Health Service
This teaching hospital and major tertiary referral centre provides specialist and emergency healthcare a catchment area of 900,000 people. It is the only major District Health Board to offer all surgical specialties on one campus and is the major trauma hospital for the region.
The unit carries out approximately 650 open heart procedures per year with an active TAVI, aortic surgery and approximately 200 thoracic cases with active thoracoscopy services uni and multiportal access.

Essential Criteria
Doctors must hold Fellowship with RACS.
