The BHC wards are a challenging environment for Senior Medical Practitioners. They are expected to manage a wide range of patients with complex medical needs, often with limited support. The expectation is that they will be able to admit patients, write medication charts, perform procedures, and complete discharge summaries independently. They are also expected to have combined governance with the emergency department in some complex patient management. The patient burden can fluctuate, so it is important to be able to take on a fair share of new patients admitted every day. There is limited palliative and geriatric support therefore SMP’s are expected to be able to manage complex geriatric patients and palliative patients independently without supervision. This is a demanding role but it can be very rewarding. Senior medical practitioners that can successfully manage these wards will have the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in a challenging environment. Reasonable workload, rewarding role, working within a very supportive and friendly team environment. Busselton is a beach town in the beautiful South West Region of WA with many touristic attractions and local event. Challenges that Senior Medical Practitioners in BHC wards may face: • Managing a wide range of patients with complex medical needs often with limited support • Limited to no support from junior doctors • Fluctuating patient burden • Limited supervision or oversight in the management of complex patients • 52 beds (including 4 hospice beds) • Admitted patients are under SMP governance • Limited JMO support (1-2 Medical JMOs , 1 Periop JMO and 1 Rehab Intern - weekdays only) • SMPs expected to do admissions, inpatient management and DC summaries - also attend MET calls with ED support Work pattern as follows: • 5 morning SMP (0800-1600) - 4 SMPs to divide the patients and do ward rounds - 1 SMP (labelled M4) to be on call for ED referrals • 1 Afternoon SMP (1200-2000) to take over the On-Call phone from the M4 • 1 Evening SMP (1500-2300) take over on call phone from afternoon SMP • Please note – night shifts – latest shift finishes 11.00pm
