This Department of Neurology is fully accredited for neurology training and provides management of an average of 20-25 neurology and stroke inpatients, plus serves a wide range of subspecialty clinics and neurophysiology services. The position is for inpatient care of neurology inpatients (average of around 10) and assessment of consults (2-4 average daily) across the hospital, working in a team with supportive Consultant on ward service and a resident medical officer. Inpatient work includes assessment and admission of patients from ED. Procedurally, experience with lumbar puncture is desirable, though not essential as other Registrars and Consultants are able to perform, as well as train a new staff member in technique. There is also one outpatient neurology clinic per week, largely for follow-up of recent inpatients, though scope to alter this pattern, depending on interest and experience. Note the department is well regarded as a supportive and training-oriented group, experienced at welcoming new staff to the department, given the department is part of a rotation for VIC/TAS advanced trainees in neurology. Junior and less experienced staff are welcome to the department, aiming to break down ‘neurophobia’ and increase confidence in assessment and management of neurological problems. The department is open to periods of leave over the summer and Christmas/New Year period, particularly as this period is a great time to visit southern Tasmania, and enjoy the local food and wine, festivals and nearby wildnerness and coastal environments.
