An Northern QLD hospital requires a Senior Medical Officer in General Practice from 23/12/2024 to 30/01/2025.
This Health Service is a level 3 (CSCF), non-birthing, 23 bed rural hospital with emergency and ambulatory services. Ambulatory services include community health nursing, child health nursing, midwifery group practice (non-birthing), advanced health workers, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, and social work onsite. Additionally, a medical imaging service limited to x-ray and clinical pharmacy service. Usual occupancy is between 60-70%, with a small number of long stay patients awaiting nursing home placement. The emergency service is located across two distinct areas, with the main ED space open in business hours only. There are four trolley spaces and two consult rooms for emergency services with access to telehealth support from Retrievals Service Queensland located with two of the four trolleys in the inpatient area.
Rostering:
The hospital is staffed with 5.5 FTE Senior Medical Officers (SMO), 1.0 FTE Medical Superintendent, 2.5 FTE PHO and 1.0 FTE Intern.
SMOs are rostered across the inpatient ward and ED. At times SMOs will work across both areas on a shift considering acuity and activity of both the inpatient ward and ED.
The service has a Medicare exemption to bill emergency presentations. Medical Officers who are not Medicare eligible for billing will be rostered to the inpatient ward.
SMOs and locums are rostered 10-hour shifts. On call burden is typically 3 on calls per week for full time FTE. An SMO typically works a morning shift and is then on call overnight from 21.30 to 07.30 and returns to an afternoon shift starting at 11.00. SMOs manage their own fatigue. On call is included in the daily fee.
Typical roster pattern is
• Monday – Friday:
o WARD – 1 SMO day shift – 07.30-18.00, 1 intern day shift
o ED – 1 SMO day shift – 07.30-18.00, 1 PHO late shift, 1 SMO late shift – 11.00-21.30.
o SMO is on call for facility from 21.30-07.30, with no doctor on site.
• Saturday/Sunday/Public Holiday:
o WARD and ED – 1 SMO day shift – 07.30-18.00, 1 PHO day shift, 1 SMO late shift – 11.00-21.30
o SMO is on call for facility from 21.30-07.30, with no doctor on site.
