The ward HMO works independently as the solo doctor providing cover to the four wards for all hours other than 1500-2100 Monday to Friday (there are two ward HMO’s during the D2 hours).
The HMO role is a mix of ward call, medical and surgical admitting. The ward HMO is responsible for running MET calls independently. The ICU HMO will attend code blue calls. They do not attend MET calls unless requested.
The role of the HMO (hospital medical officer) at the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital is to provide support to the VMOs (visiting medical officers), also referred to as Consultants or Specialists. The VMO’s are not always on site at SCUPH so the HMO onsite will be responsible for providing on site assessment and communicating with the VMO as needed.
The HMO role is provided to ensure immediate attendance at MET or Code Blue calls and to review patients at risk of deterioration. The Q-ADDS (Queensland Adult Deterioration Detection System) chart will require HMO/RMO review within 30 minutes for a score of 4 or above. You will be provided with a HMO task sheet list and orientation during your first shift.
The workload for each shift is variable. There will be quiet periods without any work and busy periods with multiple reviews and admissions to attend. The responsibility for all private patients is with the VMO so it is essential to communicate with nursing staff / VMO’s when workload is high and you cannot attend jobs within the required timeframes.
